Novalis House in Blue Hills urge residents to support charity shop to better

Novalis House manager says proceeds will help them raise much-needed funds for the organisation. To meet the ever-increasing costs of running the facility.

In a bid to find projects that will ensure the sustainability of Novalis House, the NPO urge the Midrand community to make use of their charity shop.

The NPO, based in Blue Hills, is a residential facility that provides a caring environment for people with intellectual disability.
The charity shop, which Novalis manager Mary Owen described as an income-generating project is run by volunteers.

She said it is open on Mondays only from 09:00 — 15:00.

“We have bargain prices for the second-hand goods that come to us as donations. Many of these donated items from the public are still like new and valuable such as glassware, clothing crockery, cutlery toys, paintings picture and frames,” said Owen.
She said the proceeds thereof, then help them raise much-needed funds for the organisation, to meet the ever-increasing costs of running the facility.

Owen said those who cannot buy at the shop, were welcome to donate items that are still in good condition at their facility on any weekday.

“We also can collect in the nearby residential areas. Items accepted include – clothing, linen, household items, toys and furniture,” added Owen.

She said during the day, the programme, skills and work Centre assists each person to reach their full potential.
This is done through a structured programme of training in life skills, domestic tasks and work.

The centre asks those who might have contract work for people to perform various types of contract work.
“This helps each person to develop useful cognitive and motor skills, at the same time serving as a vital source of revenue for the organisation. When made aware of this need, many companies and organisations find that they have simple tasks that can be done in our workshop,” concluded Owen.

The work we can do include:

  • Packaging
  • Mail shots, sorting and insertion work
  • Bulk labelling and collating work
  • Component assembly
  • Light manufacturing work
