City Power’s Midrand Service Centre change meter boxes

City Power customers urged to remain vigilant as they are in the ground replacing meters that are not compatible for Token ID.

City Power’s Midrand service delivery centre officials have been on the ground replacing meters that are not compatible with Token ID (TID) rollover.

Austin View, Carlswald, Country View, Country View Gardens, Crowthorne A.H, Erand A.H, Halfway Gardens, Halfway House, Kyalami, Noordwyk, Randjespark, Sagewood and Vorna Valley are some of the many suburbs the centre will be visiting.

City spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the TID resetting entails that every non-smart (old-technology) meter should be replaced with the new technology meters.
“These old-technology meters will stop accepting the credit tokens by November 2024 as the credit token will run out of available numbers. The newly-installed smart meters will also assist the customer to deal with load-shedding through the load-limiting function,” said Mangena.

He said while this will be done for free for now, and in the future, disconnect any customer found to have tampered with the newly installed meters or refused to reset the meter for TID compliance. Customers will then be charged a reconnection fee and recovery for the period of the loss.

Mangena added that the programme will assist City Power to clean up its data and ensure unmetered customers, especially in non-affluent areas, have smart meters which will enable them to buy electricity.
“And assist us to monitor and control the load as we battle with load-shedding. We appeal to residents for cooperation and to allow our officials to gain access to their properties during the implementation of this task. The customers that have already bought electricity units when the meters get changed will be refunded according to the units found on the meter.

Mangena said the power utility is aware of the growing trend of criminality using counterfeit meter reading credentials to gain entry into residential homes and rob unsuspecting customers.

He urged customers to be vigilant at all times and only allow City Power contractors with a valid card bearing their name and surname, ID photo, and expiry date.

Details: If customers are unsure of the legitimacy of the installer, they should call City Power on 011 4907553/7911 to verify the contractor’s credentials and for any inquiry regarding the meters, customers can call Tobias Nelufule on 083 417 6961.
