Snares continue to threaten animals in Midrand

The Midrand SPCA promises not to stop educating and working towards the eradication of illegal snares as long as there are animals caught in them.

The issue of snares in Midrand and nearby areas poses a persistent threat to animals.

On August 2 Patrick Muba was walking through the Pan in Glen Austin when he came across a black-backed jackal that had been caught in a snare.

The jackal was still alive and Muba knew that he had to get immediate assistance. So, he ran a distance to the Midrand SPCA to alert the team.

The Pan covers a vast area, so Muba kindly accompanied inspectors Jerry Seemise and Theo Mokgatle back to the Pan so that he could show them exactly where the jackal was situated.

After arriving, Pam Pretorius, SPCA general manager, said the team gently loaded the jackal into their vehicle and took it to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.

“It was evident that this poor jackal had been caught in this snare for some time as she was extremely dehydrated and had also suffered injuries to her eyes. She has been placed on a drip and is now in the capable hands of the Wildlife vets,” said Pretorius.

“Thank you, Patrick, for your kind and caring actions. Without you, we have no idea how long she may have continued to suffer before succumbing to her injuries and poor condition. A simple act of kindness goes such a long way.”

Patrick Muba saw the trapped jackal and alerted the Midrand SPCA.

Pretorius also thanked the inspectors for their immediate response and for handling the jackal with such care and compassion.

“And to the vets at Johannesburg Wildlife, thank you for always being ready and willing to assist the animals in need.”

As the SPCA continues to face cases where animals are caught in these death traps and endure prolonged suffering- the organisation promises not to stop educating and working towards the eradication of illegal snares.
