Substance abuse, bullying and safety campaign held at local school

Midrand police teams up with the Church of Scientology, Sanca, and Another Chance to educate Gallagher Combined School learners on safety, substance abuse, and bullying.

Midrand police joined forces with the Church of Scientology, the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, and Another Chance NPO, to engage learners at Gallagher Combined School in an enlightening school talk.

The event covered essential topics such as safety, substance abuse, and bullying, with insightful presentations and engaging discussions.
The school is known for its proactive approach to learner well-being and hosted the event despite not facing major issues in the aforementioned areas. Principal Adlet Maphosa believed ‘prevention is the key’, underscoring the importance of equipping learners with the knowledge to navigate potential challenges.

Another Chance Foundation, which is committed to the Truth About Drugs programme, sponsored by the Church of Scientology, took the stage to educate learners about commonly used substances. Their presentation included impactful videos and the distribution of informative booklets. Learners responded with enthusiasm, applauding after each video and eagerly participating in a Q&A session that followed.

Addressing the critical issue of bullying, a social worker Nozuko Mashiyi from Midrand police offered guidance on how to respond effectively when faced with such situations. This comprehensive approach ensured that learners received guidance on multiple facets of personal safety and well-being.

The learners’ reception of the presentations was overwhelmingly positive, leading to an outpouring of curiosity and eagerness to learn more. After the talks, the learners expressed their appreciation by approaching speakers with hugs and requests to stay.

Maphosa praised the initiative and said, “These kids loved your programme, can you come and work here with us? The presentations were on point and exactly what we wanted.”
