Gauteng police praise Midrand police for rescuing kidnapped woman

Two suspects, who are facing kidnapping and fraud charges, used a pellet gun and a rented vehicle with a false number plate to try to kidnap a Midrand woman.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the vigilance of Midrand police led to the rescue of a woman they believe was kidnapped by two men.

In a statement, Nevhuhulwi said on December 4, officers were patrolling when they saw a suspicious-looking vehicle at a petrol station in Midrand. She said they swiftly approached the occupants.

“Three occupants, two men and one woman were found inside the car. The woman indicated to the police that she had been kidnapped by the two men. According to the information received, the woman met one of the suspects about two weeks back in Sandton and they exchanged numbers. The one called her for a meet-up and she sent him her house location to pick her up. On the way, the man picked up the second suspect and that is when they started threatening her with a gun and forced her to open her banking app,” said Nevhuhulwi.

She said an undisclosed amount of money was transferred from her accounts. Further investigation revealed that the gun used was a pellet gun and the vehicle was a rented car fixed with a false number plate.

The duo aged 25 and 32 were arrested on the spot and appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on December 6 on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, and fraud.

“The public is urged to always be vigilant and take charge of their safety and security. With the festive season upon us, many criminals use different tactics to target unsuspecting and vulnerable victims to rob them.”
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela applauded the good work done by the members in removing criminals from the streets of Gauteng.

“We remain resolute in the fight against the scourge of fraud and kidnapping and we will continue ensuring that those who deal in such crimes are identified and brought to book,” concluded Mawela.
