Local academy, Edrei Mighty Warriors launches another branch in Randburg

The Edrei Mighty Warriors has been flourishing with the newly launched branch

The Edrei Mighty Warriors, a local netball academy, has been thriving ever since its establishment in Midrand.

The academy boasts a player strength of about 61 and has created employment opportunities for young girls and coaches within the academy. They’ve also won several tournaments.

Kgomotso Chidzalo, the academy’s founder and a passionate sports enthusiast, has taken it upon herself to uplift young girls in the community and provide them with ample opportunities to grow in the sport.

Despite the lack of sponsors and limited chances to get the girls into the league initially, Chidzalo’s unwavering determination led to the creation of another branch in Alexandra Three Square last year.

This combined the Midrand and Alex girls, providing them with more opportunities to play netball as there are more netball tournaments in Alex.

“Our academy has been making a profound difference in the lives of girls in Midrand and Alexandra, providing them with a positive outlet through netball and steering them away from the challenges of street life. We believe in the power of sports not only as a means of physical activity but as a tool for empowerment, community development, and education,” Chidzalo explained.

“Recently, we expanded our reach by opening a new branch in Randburg, where we are introducing a fee structure to generate income for the academy. This approach enables us to continue our work in Alexandra while fostering sustainability and growth,” she explained.

“The fees collected will contribute to covering operational costs, providing equipment, and creating employment opportunities for coaches and support staff. Along with the influence the academy had in Midrand, the new branch will undoubtedly play a vital role in expanding the academy’s reach.”

The academy’s vision extends beyond the netball court as they are committed to grooming future sports professionals, offering educational support to players in Grades 11 and 12, and providing pathways for further studies or careers in coaching and officiating.

“However, financial constraints have led me to personally finance these events, and some parents struggle to contribute. Platforms, such as newspapers, can help us secure sponsors and grants to alleviate these challenges, allowing us to continue nurturing talent and empowering the community.
