City Power’s Midrand SDC embarks on a revenue collection, targeting R58m

Two business entities were cut off for a combined debt of R11m in Halfway House.

City Power’s Midrand Service Delivery Centre (SDC) believe they had a successful revenue collection drive on February 8.

This comes after the power utility disconnected several non-paying business and residential customers that collectively owe Midrand SDC R350m in electricity bills.
However, on February 8, they were only chasing R58m from defaulting customers.

The collection drive started in Noordwyk Ext.95 where they disconnected a residential complex that allegedly owed R25m. Then they moved to Vorna Valley where another complex suffered the same fate – blackouts – owing R5m. A business in Halfway House was also cut off for owing the entity over R1m, a shopping centre owed R10m.

General manager of the Midrand SDC Katlego Mogale-Makoni said it was quite unfortunate that in most cases, tenants are found to be paying their electricity bills to the property management utility companies. “However, those property managers fail to pay the entity, which worryingly affects paying tenants. We condemn that behaviour with the strongest possible terms, and we urge tenants to hold their body corporates accountable for this,” said Mogale-Makoni

Spokesperson, Isaac Mangena said the entity, across all SDCs, was sitting with debt of over R8b, from customers who are refusing to pay for services.
“It’s for that reason that we have decided to clamp down on the growing culture of non-payment. We will be scaling up these operations in the coming weeks in a bid to increase the rate at which we are collecting revenue. This is essential for the wellbeing of the organisation in its mandate of delivering power supply in a manner that promotes economic and social development objectives for residents of the City of Johannesburg,” said Mangena.

He said this disconnection drive will be carried out routinely, to ensure that we restore the culture of paying for services.
Mangena concluded by urging customers to visit centres to make arrangements to pay their outstanding bills to avoid facing a cut-off.
