Austin View’s passionate soccer lover hopes to become an orthopaedic surgeon

Tintswalo Mnisi (17) from Austin View hopes to study medicine after completing his high school days at Glen Austin High School.

Glen Austin High School deputy prefect Tintswalo Mnisi believes being a member of the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) since Grade 9 has shaped him into a leader on and off the pitch.

Tinstwalo (17) is a Grade 12 learner at the school and says he is passionate about sports, especially soccer. He plays either as a goalkeeper or centre-back for the school’s senior team.

Currently in Grade 12, he was introduced to the sport by his big brothers who used to train him. They would eventually use the sport as a way of fostering a sibling bond which ultimately strengthened their brotherly relationship.

“I would say that I am an outspoken person who enjoys his own space and being by himself because that is where I feel at peace. I have learnt a lot in my RCL position including that you are not just a leader of people, but you serve more as a helper. Your most important task is to try as hard as you can to put your classmates in the best position for them to succeed in school. This can be achieved by keeping the class quiet, organised and enforcing a sense of community between everyone.”

He added that the role has also taught him effective communication skills with his peers by hearing and understanding their problems and helping them find solutions.

Tinswalo said he also enjoys learning and studying the human body, something he fell in love with at a tender age. “In the next five years, I see myself studying at the University of Cape Town.”

Tinswalo concluded that as a leader it is important to show how things should be done instead of just telling people how things should be done.
