City Parks and Zoo in the process of fencing Noordwyk Park
City Parks and Zoo install R160 000 palisade fence in Noordwyk park after trees were uprooted and bench torched a week after they were planted.

To ensure that the Blackwood Circle Park in Noordwyk is safe for residents to use, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo began with the installation of palisade fencing on February 21.

Regional manager of City Parks Dr Joseph Mbulaheni Ndou said the 1.8m high fence will include a motorised gate, and cost
R160 000.

“The work will last for two weeks and the request is for the residents to take ownership of the park, and also to look after the fence we are installing because it is costly. So if they see anyone vandalising it, then they must report it to the relevant law enforcement agencies,” said Ndou. For the opening of the park in September last year, 132 white stinkwood trees were planted and five benches were installed. However, less than a week after this, some of the trees were uprooted and one of the benches was set alight by vandals.
Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo said, “We need to work with the police and Sector 3 Crime Forum to make sure that we stop vandalism of the park and report any illegal activities happening in the park and also in the community at large. The park will benefit the community around here, and I urge every member to make use of it.”

The ward committee member responsible for the public safety portfolio Otto Ramokoka said he was happy with the progress they were making in developing the park.

“Firstly I would like to thank Dr Ndou and councillor Mphefo for the initiative which is progressing well. I urge community members to own the park and clean it because it serves as a recreational area right on our doorstep,” concluded Ramokoka.
