Operation Shanela in full effect along the R562

Police in Midrand conducted Operation Shanela, targeting crime hot-spots, issuing fines and closing illegal outlets

To clamp down on crime in Midrand, police took to the streets with a high-visibility effort called Operation Shanela on April 19.

Held along the R562 in Olifantsfontein, Brigadier Lindiwe Magudulela was the commander on the scene even though this operation was a multi-disciplinary effort.

The JMPD, Gauteng Traffic, the police, Crime Prevention Wardens and Fidelity ADT Security were all on hand.

Magudulela said the R562 had been identified as a high crime hot spot making it an ideal location to conduct searches as part of the traffic stop and search.

A large number of undocumented foreign nationals were apprehended. Traffic fines to the value of R175 00 were issued along with non-compliance fines amounting to R200 000 and two illegal liquor outlets were closed down.

The police also distributed over 300 pamphlets around Midrand to, in part, call upon members of the community to assist them in crime fighting activities.
