First-half goals secure Midrand United’s spot in RCLFA U14 Cup final
With a commanding 2–0 victory over the stubborn Stars of Africa, the stage is set for an epic showdown against Nxtgen FC on November 3.
Midrand United FC advanced to the finals of the Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) U14 Cup with a 2–0 win over Stars of Africa, thanks to first-half goals from Govan Stone and Sihle Ntshangase.
Head coach Morgan Moodley noted Stars of Africa’s tendency to control possession, prompting United to implement a strategy focused on quick ball recovery and pressing to disrupt their rhythm.
The match, held at United’s home ground, Halfway House Primary School, on October 20, showcased high energy from both teams.

Stars of Africa’s Kayaler de Villiers nearly scored early on due to a misjudgment by United’s goalkeeper, Bukasa Bukas, who quickly redeemed himself with a crucial save.
United’s first attack, initially unthreatening, proved pivotal. Abishay Naidoo’s run down the left led to a cross that Govan headed into the net, giving United the lead.
Despite Stars of Africa’s possession, United’s pressing forced errors. Ayabonga Mabizela’s failed clearance almost allowed Govan to extend the lead, but he shot wide. Stars of Africa had chances too, including a long-range free kick from Kayaler that tested Bukasa.

United doubled their lead when Sihle scored with a well-placed volley after Stars of Africa failed to clear a free kick.

Just before halftime, the visitors’ Luvuyo Tlholoe hit the crossbar following a good run and cross from Thando Hadebe.

In the second half, Stars of Africa pushed for a comeback, registering the first shot on target through Ayanda Masiko, which Bukasa saved. He was called into action again against Reotshepile Malongoa after a clever one-two, but United’s defense held firm.
Despite Stars of Africa’s efforts, United maintained their composure and discipline, protecting their first-half lead. Moodley reflected on the match, emphasising the importance of starting strong.
“We needed to take the game to Stars of Africa and get the early goals,” he said. “So, we mentally took them out of the game. Our game plan worked perfectly, we got the first goal within five minutes and the second in the 20th minute. The game was effectively won in the first half.”

Looking ahead, United will face Nxtgen FC in the finals at Halfway House, as Nxtgen also secured their place by defeating Crusaders FC. The final is set for November 3, and United is not only focused on the RCLFA cup but also on claiming the RCLFA league title, where they currently sit atop the table.

Moodley expressed confidence in his team’s spirit as they prepare for the finals. “The boys are in high spirits and want to win both the league title and the cup final. I do not foresee any issues against Nxtgen FC. We’ll focus on set pieces in practice and observe their play in the first 15 minutes, as this will be our first encounter with them.”
