Midrand’s Ward 132 councillor urges tolerance as the vibrant festival of Diwali approaches
To promote a safe Diwali for all, councillor urges residents to take precautions.
Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe is calling upon all residents to embrace tolerance and understanding as the vibrant festival of Diwali approaches.
From October 31 to November 1, Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is a time for families to come together but it can also pose challenges for pets.

“It is a significant occasion for many of our Hindu neighbours, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. This festive time brings joy, warmth, and brightness to our suburb, enhancing the rich cultural tapestry that makes Ward 132 truly unique,” Deppe said.
However, the sounds of fireworks and celebrations can be overwhelming for pets and other animals. In light of this, Deppe emphasises the importance of considering their well-being during the festivities.
“While Diwali is a time of joy and celebration, we must remember that our pets experience the world differently than we do. The loud noises and bright lights can cause significant stress for them.”

The councillor also encourages neighbours to be mindful of those who might be affected by fireworks, including those with post-traumatic stress disorder and individuals with young children.
“Let us work together to ensure our community remains a peaceful place where everyone, including our pets, can enjoy the festivities.
“As we prepare to celebrate Diwali, let us remember to respect each other’s experiences and treat every member of our community two-legged and four-legged, with kindness and consideration.”
To promote a safe and festive atmosphere for all, Deppe is urging residents to take the following precautions:
- Keep pets indoors: Fireworks can frighten animals, so it is best to keep them indoors during peak celebration times. Provide a quiet and comfortable space for them to retreat to.
- Create a safe space: Set up a cosy area with their favourite toys and blankets. This can help them feel secure amid the festivities.
- Stay calm: Pets are sensitive to the emotions of their owners. Try to remain calm and relaxed, as pets can pick up on anxiety, which can heighten their stress levels.
- Consider alternatives: If using fireworks, consider quieter, pet-friendly options, or look for community events that use less disruptive forms of celebration.
