Midrand Emergency Medical Services showcase world-class readiness

As Gauteng prepares to host the first-ever G20 Summit on African soil, government officials visited EMS Midrand to assess the province's emergency response readiness ahead of the summit.

The Gauteng government, led by Premier Panyaza Lesufi, visited the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) in Midrand to assess the province’s emergency response readiness ahead of the upcoming G20 Summit, which will be hosted in Gauteng on November 22 and 23.

During the visit, on September 9, Lesufi, along with members of the executive council and mayors, toured the ECC.

This facility is equipped with a live dashboard that monitors emergency calls, ambulance dispatch, major incidents, hospital diversions, vehicle movements, and human resource capacity – all aimed at improving service delivery and response times.

Gauteng EMS operates a fleet of over 500 emergency vehicles available per shift, including advanced ICU and obstetrics ambulances, rescue units, and a disaster response bus. In addition, Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services has 65 vehicles to ensure dignified and efficient handling of fatalities.

The Gauteng Department of Health also presented a comprehensive report highlighting the readiness of health facilities to deliver quality healthcare services, supported by skilled personnel and state-of-the-art medical equipment.

During the G20 Summit, a dedicated medical centre will be established at the main venue to provide on-site medical support and ensure a swift response to any health-related incidents.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit will focus on themes of solidarity, equality, and sustainable development, with a special emphasis on Africa’s development agenda.

This summit will be the first to take place on the African continent, and will culminate a year of discussions addressing critical issues, such as inclusive growth, food security, artificial intelligence, and climate change.
