Midrand chess players think ahead as tournament action looms
The countdown is on as Midrand Chess Club prepares players for the Midrand Classic on August 29 and JMC Teams League on August 30.
With a busy tournament weekend on the horizon, Midrand Chess Club is sharpening its players’ skills as they prepare to compete in two major chess events.
The club held a focused practice session on August 22 at Halfway House Primary School, with players working on key areas of their game ahead of the Midrand Classic on August 29 and the Johannesburg Metro Chess (JMC) Teams League on August 30.

Midrand Chess Club coach Kgosimang Molefe said the session focused on helping players strengthen their opening preparation and improve their understanding of middlegame positions.
“We had a focused training session to prepare the players for the upcoming JMC Teams League and the Midrand Classic, both taking place next weekend.”
According to the coach, one of the biggest improvements among the players has been their ability to understand positions and make better decisions over the board.
“We’ve been working on helping players understand why they make certain moves, rather than just memorising openings. They are becoming better at identifying plans, recognising weaknesses, and looking for opportunities in the middlegame.”

Molefe said the practice sessions are important, because they give players an opportunity to test their knowledge, sharpen their preparation, and build confidence before entering competitive games.
“This training is really about making sure the players are mentally and technically ready for two competitive days of chess.
“From a broader perspective, the goal is to continue developing stronger young chess players in Midrand. We want players to participate in competitions, but also develop the discipline, concentration, strategic thinking, and confidence that chess brings.
“Ultimately, we want to see chess continue growing in Midrand and give more young players opportunities to compete, learn, and represent their community.”
