Noordwyk soccer star named in SA U20 squad for FIFA World Cup in Chile

Not many high school learners can say they’ve won AFCON and are heading to the FIFA World Cup, but Lazola Maku can.

Noordwyk Secondary School’s own Lazola Maku is headed to the global stage as part of the South African U20 national team, set to compete in the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile later this month.

The 18-year-old midfielder, currently in Grade 12, was officially named in coach Raymond Mdaka’s final 21-man squad, which will represent South Africa at the prestigious youth tournament from September 27 to October 19.

Lazola is no stranger to international success. He was part of Amajita’s side which made history by winning their first-ever TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations title in June, after a tense 1–0 victory over Morocco at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo.

Speaking to Midrand Reporter ahead of his departure, Lazola expressed pride in being selected once again to don the national jersey.

“Representing the country on such a big stage is always an honour. I’m grateful to have been part of the team that won AFCON, and now I feel emotional, knowing that the whole nation will be watching as we step onto the world stage.”

Currently playing for Siwelele FC, Lazola is known for his tactical intelligence and ability to both anchor the midfield defensively and spark attacks going forward. With maturity beyond his years, he is expected to bring much-needed stability to the squad in Chile.

Despite the demanding schedule ahead, the Noordwyk Secondary learner remains committed to his academics. He admits that balancing school and football isn’t easy; however, he is taking his books with him to Chile, as he wants to do well in both.

His message to other aspiring young footballers is simple: “Just work hard.”

The team will assemble in Johannesburg, on September 19, and depart for Chile on September 24.
