Sombre memorial for Grade 2 learner Nsuku Mabunda

Pear Baloyi, Nsuku’s class teacher, said she lost a son following the untimely passing of the 7-year-old.

The late 7-year-old Nsuku Mabunda from Allandale View was described as a fearless learner dedicated to his studies.

This was revealed during Nsuku’s memorial service at Noordwyk Primary School on October 15.

Nsuku died on October 10 while being transported to the Ebony Park Clinic.

This is after he fell into a 10m deep pit filled with water. He was retrieved by his uncle, Xolani Hadebe.

During the moving memorial service at the school assembly, emotions ran high for the learners, teachers, and parents.

Nsuku’s class teacher, Pearl Baloyi, said she was still trying to process the news of his passing.

She said as a teacher, she lost a part of her Grade 2 family – a son.

“Your empty chair in the classroom is a painful reminder of your absence, and I know your friends will miss you dearly. You made our class a brighter place,” said Baloyi.

She said the pain she carries puts a heavy weight on her heart.

A visibly emotional principal, Lynelle Eloff, said there were no words to adequately express the shock and sorrow that had fallen upon their school community.

“The passing of our dear learner has left us heartbroken. In our classrooms, there is now an empty chair and a quiet desk where Nsuku once sat. His laughter, curiosity, and boundless energy once filled those spaces, leaving behind memories we will forever cherish,” said Eloff.

She added that while Nsubu’s time with them was tragically short, his light shone brightly – brighter than words can ever capture.
