Moving memorial service for lost Grade 12 learner

A Local high school learner was killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident in Noordwyk two weeks after celebrating his 19th birthday.

A Grade 12 Midrand High School learner’s life has been cut short. Michael ‘Jnr’ Chauke was killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident by an alleged drunk driver in Noordwyk on August 23.

This happened two weeks after Jnr celebrated his 19th birthday on August 4.

At the moment, it is unclear if the driver has been arrested, or if he was alone, or with his friends, at the time of the incident.

The school held a moving memorial service for Jnr on August 27, where his peers described him as someone who lived his life to the fullest.

An emotional Khazimla Gatywa, another Grade 12 learner, said Jnr would always ensure she left the school safely, before he could leave. “Sometimes, when I was mad at him, he would stand next to me and hold my hand. He would tell me, ‘No matter how much I am angry at him, he is not going anywhere and will always be my friend’.”

Attempts to speak to the Grade 12 head and parents were unsuccessful, as they both said they were too emotional and would engage Midrand Reporter at a later stage.
Jnr will be laid to rest in Diepsloot on Saturday, August 30.
