Gauteng Department of Education responds to the non-payment of Mayibuye High School teachers

The department spokesperson, Steve Mabona said the teachers’ salaries will be paid in due course.

The Gauteng Department of Education has responded to mounting concerns over unpaid salaries at Mayibuye High School, confirming that payments for five affected teachers are now at an advanced stage.

This follows a report alleging that the educators have not received their salaries for two consecutive months — September and October — with November marking a third month of working without pay.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona explained that the affected teachers are employed in temporary, substitute posts.

“These teachers’ contracts are renewed on a three-month basis, and the necessary documentation must be submitted every cycle to process payments accordingly,” said Mabona.

“There was a late submission of employment contracts, which resulted in delays. However, the payment process is now at an advanced stage and will be completed in due course.”

The salary issue comes amid broader allegations reported in the article, Mayibuye High teachers claim they have not been paid in two months, which also accuses the institutional development and support officer (IDSO) of nepotism in appointments.

This is not the first time the school has faced salary-related issues.

In June, about 15 teachers were left unpaid. Six months later, five more teachers have experienced the same problem.

At the time, the department attributed the delays to incomplete forms that were submitted late to human resources.
