Plans to boost community safety with Khusela app

Two entrepreneurs, David Omiwole and Michael Lukayi, are bringing their skills to benefit the Midrand community, with an app that will make scholar transport safer for drivers and parents.

David Omiwole and Michael Lukayi are the brilliant minds behind a new app called Khusela.

Following the uproar from parents after a number of scholar transport accidents earlier this year, the idea of the Khusela app came about.

The two, young business partners, from Halfway Gardens and Vorna Valley in Midrand, saw a gap in the regulation of scholar transport. The app, completely voluntary at first, will see scholar transport drivers inputting their information: name, licence, etc, into the app for parents to see that they are legitimate.

The app will then also send notifications to parents when their children are fetched and dropped off, especially for parents that are at work.

The plan is for the app to be up and running by next year, and negotiations between the company and government are ongoing, to make the app compulsory for all scholar transport drivers.

When responding to why they chose Khusela as the name of their app, Lukayi said: “We wanted a name that resonates with our people, because we really are for our community. Also to emphasise what we are trying to do with this app, which is to protect our future, the children using scholar transports. We then thought Khusela was the best name, as it means protection.”

The two actuarial and computer science university students sought to use their skills and knowledge from school for the betterment of residents of Midrand.

“To help parents and drivers navigate our app,” said Omiwole, “we will be sending out about 50 to 100 people. These young people will mostly be TVET college students who did computer science. They will be called the Khusela Champions.

“We are hoping that, with this, we will be helping the government, by providing skills to the youth.”

Khusela is an app made to mitigate the increase of car accidents, especially scholar transport accidents, and ensure better relations between parents and drivers.
