City Power completes normalisation of meters in Mayibuye

The success of the normalisation of meters programme in Mayibuye has been attributed to the commitment made by the residents to pay for their electricity.

City Power has completed the installation of smart meters in Mayibuye.

This groundbreaking project began on November 6 last year and was officially concluded on December 18.
According to City Power spokesperson Issac Mangena, the project had challenges that caused delays in the initial projected completion time.

However, despite these setbacks, the teams worked hard to install new meters in the community while running educational campaigns to demonstrate how the smart meters functioned.

The success of the normalisation programme has been attributed to the commitment made by Mayibuye residents to pay for their electricity, which will go a long way in ensuring that the entity can maintain the infrastructure, procure materials, electrify informal settlements, and ensure a reliable supply of electricity.
Previously, despite spending millions of rands on maintaining and replacing electricity infrastructure, only one business was paying for electricity consumption in Mayibuye, according to Mangena. Thus, the latest developments are a big boost to the utility’s revenue collection endeavours.

Reflecting on the success of the normalisation programme, Midrand SDC general manager Katlego Mogale-Makoni said it was a step in the right direction.
“For the past two weeks, we have been at Mayibuye every single day making sure that we educate the community about the smart meters. There had been fears that residents were now going to spend a lot of money on electricity,” Mogale-Makoni added.

“In the end, the community was happy that they have information and are empowered enough to know what to do in minimising electricity usage.”

The programme is part of a bigger project by the City of Johannesburg to install smart meters in every residential household, which will help in addressing the issue of load-shedding through better management of electricity consumption.
