Counterfeit goods worth R3b seized in Clayville

Gauteng police seized counterfeit goods in Clayville with a street value of R3b.

As part of the Safer Festive Season campaign, and in an effort to combat the trade in counterfeit goods, the Gauteng police recently conducted a raid in Clayville.

The counterfeit goods that were found in Clayville included a variety of famous designer brands, such as clothing, shoes, and accessories, among others.

The estimated street value of these items was approximately R3b.

The success of the joint operation is due in large part to the collaboration the police and SARS, along with other stakeholders, including brand protectors and other law enforcement agencies across the province.

The estimated street value of the seized items is approximately R3b.

The items were destroyed to prevent them from re-entering the market.

On October 20, the minister of police, General Bheki Cele, and national commissioner General Fannie Masemola joined the provincial commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, at the Gauteng Industrial Estate in Clayville to oversee the destruction of the counterfeit items.

The Safer Festive Season Operational Plan was initiated in mid-October across all provinces in the country.

The plan aims to focus on seven key areas, including gender-based violence and femicide, the combatting of serious and violent crimes such as aggravated robberies, road safety, border security, the strengthening of by-laws, and the prevention of illegal mining.

“We will not co-govern with criminals. We are going toe-to-toe with them. Our priority is the safety and security of all the inhabitants of this country and their property. Police officers are instructed to also sharpen their response to the most vulnerable in society during the holiday period and beyond,” said General Cele.
