Suspect caught by Ria Sebetsa in cellphone grabbing incident in Midrand also wanted by Moroka Police
The suspect was caught at the scene of the crime, while two accomplices managed to escape. She is scheduled to appear at the Protea Magistrate Court on November 1 for her hearing.
A female suspect, linked to a cellphone theft, was recently apprehended by the Ria Sebetsa Security response team and handed over to Midrand police, while two accomplices escaped.
At approximately 12:00 on October 16, Ria Sebetsa’s 24/7 control room received urgent reports from security personnel and community members about a cellphone grabbing incident near a shopping centre on 7th Road.
In response, CEO Danny Maduray stated that the armed response team was immediately dispatched.
Their swift action led to the capture of one female suspect involved in the attempted theft.
“Three females entered a local salon, deceptively posing as customers in order to blend in,” Maduray explained.

“They targeted a cellphone that was carelessly lying on the table, but their attempt to grab it was unsuccessful. As soon as they realised that their plan had failed, the suspects tried to make a hasty escape. One female suspect was apprehended right at the scene, while two accomplices managed to flee in a White Toyota Etios, whose registration number remains unknown.”
After the arrest, Midrand police were contacted and the suspect was handed over for further processing, including identity verification and checks for prior criminal activity.
“It was confirmed that the apprehended individual was not only connected to this incident but was also wanted by the Moroka police for involvement in similar theft cases that had occurred in their jurisdiction,” he added.
Captain Jeff Phora, spokesperson for the district police, confirmed that the Moroka police are pursuing a theft case, and the suspect has already appeared in court, where she was remanded in custody. She is scheduled to appear at the Protea Magistrate Court on November 1 for her hearing.
Phora also mentioned he would check with the Midrand police department to determine if a separate case had been opened following the arrest.
