Police crackdown sees over 11 000 arrested nationwide – 2 086 for murder

Intensive operations see arrests and confiscations of firearms and more as the police strive to make the country safer.

The SAPS through its Operation Shanela crackdowns across the country have arrested 11 059 suspects in the week ending November 17.

Of those, 2 086 were for serious crimes such as murder and rape. 125 murder suspects were taken into police custody with the majority coming from Gauteng.

The sting activities comprised roadblocks, high visibility patrols, tracking operations and more.

Successes of the operation included:

  • 115 suspects were arrested for attempted murder
  • 191 suspects were arrested for rape
  • 1 395 suspects were arrested for assault GBH
  • 329 drug dealers were arrested
  • 1 355 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs
  • 128 suspects were arrested for illegal possession of firearms
  • 1 364 illegal foreign nationals were arrested
  • 405 drivers were arrested for drunk and driving.

In recoveries and confiscations, police registered the following successes:

  • 137 firearms were confiscated
  • 2 003 rounds of ammunition were confiscated
  • 61 hijacked and stolen vehicles were recovered

Other successes included 11 suspects who were arrested for alleged extortion, unlawful possession of rhino horns and protected plants, and the seizure of illegal cigarettes.
