City Power’s Midrand Service Delivery Centre has discovered, and ultimately removed, two transformers in Mayibuye, Ward 110.

The entity’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said the transformers were found, built into a shack, on November 19 in the Floyd Shivambu informal settlement.
“City Power confiscated two illegally connected transformers. These transformers were found hidden inside a locked shack, demonstrating the lengths some individuals go to in order to steal electricity,” said Mangena.
He said the removal action of transformers highlights City Power’s commitment to holding residents accountable for electricity theft.

Mangena added that illegal connections undermine the reliability of services for paying customers.

“Illegal connections lead to significant financial losses in revenue for the utility, and pose significant threats to our infrastructure. [They] triggers frequent power outages and puts immense pressure on our electricity network. They also lead to overloading, equipment exploding and catching fire, and prolonged widespread outages. They further lead to delays in repairing the damages, or replacing the equipment,” added Mangena.
He said they will continue to closely monitor this area, and others, and actively engage with law enforcement agencies to assist with their ongoing efforts to tackle the ever-growing problem of illegal connections.
