Time capsule burial ceremony to celebrate Summerhill Nursery’s 30th anniversary
Some of the items placed in the time capsule were old photographs, storybooks, newspapers, yearbooks, and toys.
Summerhill Nursery learners gathered in the parking lot with excitement for the cherished Time Capsule Ceremony, a significant tradition of the school.
Held in early October, this year’s event also celebrated the nursery’s 30th anniversary.
Under the guidance of principal Sonya Toet and the dedicated staff, meaningful items were selected to be placed inside the time capsule, which is set to be opened in 2054.

The children were fascinated by the concept and eagerly discussed the treasures they would unearth in the future.
The time capsule not only honours the past but also celebrates the present, linking generations of learners.
One of the learners, Tannaya Mawire, shared her thoughts during the ceremony. She expressed that even though she would no longer be a learner at the school in 30 years, she was optimistic about the future.
Tannaya said it was likely she would still see the time capsule when she returned to drop off her own child at the nursery, thus continuing the cycle of learning and community involvement.
The children enthusiastically proposed items for the capsule, including old photographs, beloved storybooks, a newspaper, a yearbook of their experiences, and toys representing their childhood joys.

Toet expressed her gratitude for the presence of Eda Gonsalves, who played a pivotal role in the development of the nursery school since its inception in 1994. “We were fortunate to have Eda Gonsalves with us to bury the time capsule,” Toet remarked.
Gonsalves began the nursery with just five learners on what was then an empty farm plot, and even now, in her retirement, she remains actively involved in the school’s events, cherishing the opportunity to be around the children.
The ceremony also included members of the Summerhill Seniors Protea Club, who generously support the school. As a symbolic gesture, the club contributed a lemon tree, which was placed on top of the time capsule to mark its location.
The school looks forward to its resurfacing in the future, bringing back memories for a community that has long valued the nursery.
