Midrand Police see massive improvement in serious contact crime category in latest stats

Minister Senzo Mchunu said rape, murder, attempted murder, and assault GBH – where Midrand improved – was where they saw a scourge in the country.

Midrand Police Station has seen an impressive decline in the contact crime category. Contact crime includes murder, assault with intent to cause or inflict grievous bodily harm (GBH), common assault, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

This was revealed in the second quarter crime stats which were released on November 25 by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

They compare crime patterns from July to September for the last five years (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024).

Between July and September 2020, the station recorded two murder cases, seven in 2021, nine the following year, three last year, and four this year.
This leaves the station with four counts lower than last year. For assault GBH, 11, 15, 11, 18, and 16 respectively, leaving them with two counts lower than last year.

Mchunu said police have identified core crimes shaping the environment which are their priorities in a scourge of violent crimes across the country: murder, attempted murder, assault GBH, and rape.

“We are battling the growing menace of organised crime and we are also grappling with economic crimes that threaten the foundations of our economy and the livelihoods of millions of South Africans, including extortion and criminality on critical infrastructure,” said Mchunu. “From July 1 to September 1, 2024, the 17 community reported serious crimes showed an overall decline of 5.1%. Specifically, contact crime decreased by 3%, property-related crime saw a reduction of 9.9%, and other serious crime decreased by 3.4%. Focusing on contact crime, the statistics indicate that murder decreased by 5.8%, sexual offences by 2.5%, and robbery with aggravating circumstances by 8.8%.”

Midrand is ranked sixth in the country and second in the province for serious reported crime, despite making strides in the contact crime category. It is in the top 30 crime-plagued stations despite recording an eight count difference, which is a 0.4% decline compared to the same time last year.
