Coach reflects on Midrand Chess Foundations achievements and outlines ambitious plans for the future

Looking ahead to the next year, the club is enthusiastic about expanding its initiatives to reach even more underprivileged youth, introducing them to the educational and strategic benefits of chess.

“Through the power of chess, we have built a community where every move inspires growth.” These are the words of Kgosimang Molefe, founder and coach of the Midrand Chess Foundation, as he reflected on the foundation’s achievements over the past year, and outlined their ambitious plans for the future.

“Together, we are shaping champions, not just for the chessboard but for life beyond the game,” Molefe emphasised.

A major milestone for the foundation this year was the successful launch of the Midrand Chess League, a highlight of their efforts that has significantly promoted youth development and sparked interest in competitive chess.

Additionally, the foundation introduced 40 U16 chess players to competitive chess through the Alexandra initiative, helping them earn official ratings from Chess South Africa. This experience has been invaluable for these young talents, allowing them to flourish in a supportive environment.

The foundation also hosted the Johannesburg Clubs tournament, organised with generous support from the Gauteng Department of Sports.

“We have significantly expanded our community initiatives, thanks to the unwavering support of parents, local organisations, and dedicated sponsors,” said Molefe. This collaboration has been vital in advancing their mission and inspiring chess players.

Molefe also shared insights on chess’ importance during an appearance on SAfm, raising the club’s profile nationally.

Looking ahead, the foundation aims to reach more underprivileged youth, highlighting the educational and strategic benefits of chess. “One of our primary goals is to strengthen the Midrand Chess League and enhance collaboration with local schools to grow the sport among school-aged children,” Molefe explained.

Young chess players compete at Halfway House Primary School in the Midrand Chess League.

The foundation plans to host larger tournaments and events to promote competitive chess in and around Midrand, and to build partnerships that will secure more resources for long-term sustainability.

Molefe expressed special gratitude to Wynand Bezuidenhout for helping the club acquire new chess pieces, contributing to much of their success this year.

He also thanked the leadership team, including Kabelo Mathabe and Norman Malinga, for their exceptional dedication to the club’s development, along with heartfelt appreciation to all parents for their continued support.
