Reckless driving case against footballer postponed to May

The footballer, Mokete Sean Mogaila, surrendered himself to the Rabie Ridge Police Station in connection with an alleged reckless driving incident last year.

The Tembisa Magistrate’s Court has postponed the case against footballer, Mokete Sean Mogaila (29), until May 19.

The footballer surrendered himself to the Rabie Ridge Police Station in connection with an alleged reckless driving incident. The incident, which occurred on Andrew Mapheto Road, in Tembisa, during the early hours of October 30, 2024, tragically claimed the life of nine-year-old, Gomolemo Mavimbela.

Mogaila’s court appearance was scheduled for February 4, after he was granted R20 000 bail.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the state alleges that, on the aforementioned date, Mogaila’s vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided with another vehicle, carrying a woman and two children.

“Tragically, the nine-year-old lost her life, while the mother and 13-year-old boy were severely injured,” said Mjonondwane.

“The police found, what is alleged to be, alcohol bottles and drugs in Mogaila’s vehicle after the accident. Initially, Mogaila fled the scene but later on that day handed himself to authorities, where he was charged with reckless driving, fleeing the scene of the accident, and culpable homicide.”

The case has been postponed for further investigations, including, amongst others, the outcome of the post-mortem examination. Mogaila’s bail has been extended until his next court appearance.
