Intruders steal electronics in Vorna Valley, holding family hostage for two hours

Tebatso Thelejane said the suspects came through the girl's bedroom window which was slightly open.

It was an early morning of terror for a Vorna Valley household following an armed robbery on January 21.

Three perpetrators made off with various electronics, including three cellphones and a laptop.
The owner of the house, Tebatso Thelejane said it was a traumatising two-hour ordeal that he and his family endured on January 21.

Thelejane lives with his three daughters, and his niece.

He said the incident occurred about 02:10. “I went to bed around midnight. So, my bedroom is on the far end of the house while the girls’ bedroom is also on the other end. At first, I thought the girls were laughing at a movie or something they had been watching when I left them. But I thought it was strange when I could also hear men’s voices,” Thelejane recalled.

He said as a precaution, he used a back door from his bedroom to make his way to the lounge. While on his way, he made a call to his security company.

“When I knocked on the [lounge] door, the intruders asked who was at the door, and the kids responded, ‘It’s dad’. They came with my niece, who had a gun to her head and they asked me to come into the lounge or they would kill her.”

He added his niece had been hit on the head with a gun.

Thelejane said it took about six minutes for a security officer to arrive who then called for backup.

Eventually, more security officers arrived together with members of the Midrand police but by that time the robbers had already made their exit.

District police spokesperson Captain Jeff Phora was contacted to confirm the incident but referred the publication to Colonel Mpho Tshethlane who had not responded by the time of going to print.
