Glen Austin community unites through food hampers

What started as food parcels to help those who had lost their jobs ended up being a way of bringing the community closer to each other.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Glen Austin Conservancy (GCA) and community members took it upon themselves to provide food for families who were going through a tough time.

The majority of households in Glen Austin produce their vegetables, chickens and eggs, and the community continues to provide nine households with fresh produce every two weeks.

The vice chairman of GCA Judy Bird said, “We have one team of people who go around collecting food from various households on Wednesdays, and then they take it to a central point where they pack it into hampers, and another team goes to deliver. Currently, we do not have anyone who can supply us with dry goods, which would be really helpful to our community, so we would like to ask people if they can help us with dry goods.”
