The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall’s Hub of activity brings real-world experience to the lecture room
Team Cyber Surge was selected as the winning team because their proposal showcased exceptional clarity and aligned with the needs of Spryar Tech.
Earlier this year, the IIE Varsity College Waterfall’s School of Computer Science, as part of its Epicentre, launched The Hub for Innovation, Ventures, and Entrepreneurship (The Hive).
The Hive is a dynamic initiative designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry. It actively engages with industry partners to facilitate student-led projects, providing students at Varsity College with crucial real-world experiences.
In a recent collaboration with Spryar Tech, which identified the need for a mobile asset management application with offline functionality, students enthusiastically responded to the challenge.

Four dedicated teams from The Hive stepped up and developed innovative proposals tailored to Spryar Tech’s asset management application requirements. The teams presented their project proposals to Spryar Tech’s representatives on campus at The Hive, showcasing a range of potential solutions.
Out of the four teams, Team Cyber Surge was selected as the winning team due to their proposal’s exceptional clarity and alignment with the needs of Spryar Tech, establishing a foundation for collaboration on the application’s development and implementation.
Nandi Cheryl Gugulethu Msimanga, a third-year bachelor’s student in Computer and Information Sciences specialising in application development and a member of Cyber Surge, shared that the project with Spryar Tech was quite different from her previous assignments.
She chose to tackle this project because she enjoys challenging herself. “I’m truly grateful to have participated in this project as it was, among other things, an opportunity to enhance my IT skills because we’re working with a tech stack that’s new to us,” said Msimanga.
“I believe this experience will be invaluable in the workplace and will help me be adaptable, rather than confined to a single tech stack. The Hive is providing great opportunities like these, and I’m confident that even more excellent opportunities will emerge from this space.
“I think our team was chosen because of our passion for technology and our eagerness to apply our interests in real-world scenarios.”

While the software development initiatives within The Hive are not assessed for academic credit, they serve as a vital skill-building opportunity beyond the classroom environment.
Students engage in real-world projects and receive mentorship from esteemed industry professionals, such as Andrew Turpin, managing director of Cyber-Mint, who provides invaluable guidance to The Hive teams, drawing on his extensive experience in banking and payment systems technology.
