City Power continues smart metering project in Klipfontein, after success in Mayibuye

Building on previous successes, the initiative aims to enhance service delivery, promote efficient electricity use, and empower residents with better control over their energy consumption.

City Power’s Midrand Service Delivery Centre (SDC) is actively continuing its major smart metering project for residents.

This initiative began in Mayibuye in November 2023 when City Power successfully normalised the area. On June 3, the entity officially commenced the normalisation of smart meters in Klipfontein after several discussions with Ward 32 councillor Dimakatso Moloisane and his leadership team.

An educational campaign was held on May 18 and 24, organised by City Power officials, to demonstrate to the community how the smart meters work. These sessions were well-attended by residents.

The primary purpose of this initiative is to ensure a stable electricity supply and to enable residents to start purchasing electricity. Pagadi Makgoba, the acting senior stakeholder officer for the Midrand SDC, provided a brief explanation to interested customers about the entity’s efforts to upgrade Klipfontein with smart meters.

“What we are doing now is implementing high-discipline metering. We remove the old meters that do not work and replace them with prepaid meters for all these areas in Klipfontein,” said Makgoba. “If you have tenants, you can go to stores and buy sub-meters for them, which you can then install in their rooms so they can purchase electricity for themselves as well.”

Katlego Mogale-Makoni, the general manager of Midrand SDC, also engaged with community members on-site, providing a detailed explanation of how the smart meters function and showcasing their advanced features.

“If you are renting out rooms, you need to be honest about that so you can avoid excessive costs. We will visit your home with you to assess your electricity setup and advise you on how to reasonably fix any issues,” Mogale-Makoni explained.
