Power system under strain as outages hit multiple areas in Midrand
Power outages persist in parts of Midrand, prompting City Power to urge residents to reduce consumption.
Residents and businesses across parts of Midrand are being urged to cut back on electricity use, as the local power system faces significant strain amid ongoing outages and delays in restoration efforts.
According to City Power, the system is under constrained conditions, increasing the risk of further disruptions if demand isn’t reduced.
The call for voluntary conservation comes as technicians continue working to resolve multiple faults across key switching stations in the area.
In Rabie Ridge, parts of Ext 1 and 2 remain without power, following a fault at the local switching station yesterday. City Power says two load centres are still offline due to what they describe as ‘double faults’, a complex type of failure affecting multiple parts of the circuit.
“The test branch team has been requested to assist with fault location,” said the utility in a statement.
Meanwhile, over in the Hoogenhout and Du Toit streets area, around 20% of customers are still without electricity, despite partial restoration efforts at the Anton Hartmann switching station. Crews managed to restore power to most of the area, but double faults continue to hinder a full recovery.
Further complicating the situation, a water pipe was accidentally damaged during fault-finding operations on Tuesday, forcing crews to halt work temporarily. Although the faults have been located, service providers have struggled to carry out repairs at the identified sites. Work is expected to resume this morning.
At present, City Power has not provided an estimated time for full restoration.
Adding to the pressure on the system, planned maintenance at the Halfway Gardens switching station is proceeding as scheduled today, from 09:00 to 17:00. This will affect Jandel Road and parts of the Waterfall Business Park.
Residents have been advised to unplug all their appliances during the outage.
