WATCH | Mayibuye residents block in City Power workers over power dispute

The residents says City Power officials entered the area earlier today, and will not be allowed to leave until the matter is addressed.

Residents of Mayibuye have blocked access to the area following allegations that a City Power official unlawfully disconnected electricity.

City Power claimed it had completed the process of normalising smart meters in the area, but residents insist this is not the case.

Protesters have barricaded the entrance at the corner of Senamorula and Theresa streets, saying City Power officials entered the area earlier and will not be allowed to leave until the matter is addressed.

“We have a serious problem with City Power,” said one resident leading the protest, who did not want to be named. “They [City Power] told Midrand Reporter that they had finished installing smart meters in Mayibuye and were moving on to Kaalfontein. But the truth is, they never completed the normalisation process here. Now, they keep coming back and switching off our electricity without finishing the job or letting us know that they are coming.

“Today, they entered the area and disconnected our power without giving us any notice. That is why we’ve blocked the road—our demand is simple: they must reconnect us first. Once that’s done, we’ll open the road.”

Captain Sekgobela said according to a communication officer from the Rabie Ridge Police Station, authorities are not yet aware of the protest in Mayibuye.
