Ward 110 councillor believes Mayibuye protest politically influenced

Mayibuye residents protested about electricity in their area, but when City Power came to help, they chased them away, according to Ward 110 councillor Angie Mphaho.

Ward 110 councillor Angie Mphaho said today’s Mayibuye protest is politically motivated.

Speaking to the paper today (June 30), Mphaho said she was surprised by how the Mayibuye residents demanded electricity, while they chase City Power officials away.

She said, some sections in the township have not been normalised, following last year’s drive by City Power to normalise meter boxes. “Remember, there was a protest on [June 25]. The residents called me and asked me to send City Power to help with fixing some of their issues. I called City Power, but when they got there, residents prevented them from entering the township and helping solve their electricity challenges.”

She believes that some political leaders in the area are doing this to influence next year’s local government elections.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the entity is aware of an unplanned power outage in Mayibuye, resulting from network overloading, which is a challenge that continues to plague the area due to widespread illegal connections and tampering with electricity meters.

“While we acknowledge the inconvenience this has caused, it is important to inform affected residents that our teams will not be dispatched to restore supply until certain conditions are met. This follows a recent and deeply troubling incident in which City Power technicians were held hostage and threatened while conducting legitimate maintenance work in the area.”
