Johannesburg Water addresses blockage at Summerset Estate

JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala addressed the blockage that took place at Summerset Estate in Noordwyk.

Johannesburg Water (JW) spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala has warned residents against disposing of foreign objects in the sewerage system. Shabalala was responding to the week-long turnaround time to repair a blocked manhole in the upmarket Summerset Estate in Noordwyk.

She said the reference number assigned to the estate manager, Rhona Rakow, was followed up by a JW technical team, saying that the team found the line to be clear upon inspection, and it is likely that the obstruction causing the blockage had shifted or moved, resulting in the issue resolving itself.

“Blockages are commonly caused by the disposal of inappropriate materials into the sewerage system, such as fats, oils, grease, rags, and foreign objects,” said Shabalala.

Shabalala was asked about allegations that a JW team came and told Rakow that they did not have the right equipment to fix it on the spot, which added to more delays.

She said all sewerage teams are fully equipped with appropriate manual rodding tools. “In cases where a sewer line cannot be cleared manually, the team will request assistance from a hydrojetting truck, which provides significantly greater hydraulic pressure and cleaning power. While we understand that it may come across as the team not having the right equipment on site, this is not the case,” added Shabalala.

She said this escalation in the method of working and following due procedure, should, therefore, not be misinterpreted as a lack of proper equipment by the JW team.
