Noordwyk residents still without water, after another pipe burst

Johannesburg Water struggles to fix pipe burst in Noordwyk, leaving residents’ taps dry for three days.

Frustrated Noordwyk residents have been without water for three days now.

This started in the evening of July 25, and, by July 28, Johannesburg Water (JW) teams were still trying to repair the pipe burst that caused the outage.

Initially, the pipe burst on Eighth and Lever roads was repaired on July 26, however, shortly after that, another pipe burst occurred down the same line.

In a communication update, JW said they repaired the 200mm asbestos water pipe. “Following completion of the work, the supply was reopened to begin recharging the system. Unfortunately, another pipe burst occurred further downstream during this process.”

They added that their team is currently on site and actively attending to the new burst. “There’s no estimated time of completion. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

On July 27, JW said they were still working on the new pipe burst repairs, which was complex as it required welding. “A welder is en route to the site. Once welding is completed, the water supply will be restored.”

In the meantime, they said alternative water supply, through water tankers, will be provided in the affected areas, including Eighth, Lever, George, Liebenberg, 10th, and Kiaat streets, and surroundings.

Interim Ward 112 councillor Otto Kgeletsane pleaded with residents to get as much water as possible. “Water tankers are available on Liebenberg Road, but the drivers are not allowed to drive to individual houses. I will keep updating [residents]. Thank you for your patience. It is difficult not to have basic services, especially water.”
