DA Ward 132 marks Mandela Day with hands-on community clean-up

Armed with gloves, weed-eaters, paint brushes, and hacksaws, the group dedicated their time to tidying the area and giving the Angel Tots Academy a fresh coat of paint.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), in Ward 132, demonstrated the true spirit of community by organising a meaningful clean-up and upliftment initiative in Midrand on Mandela Day.

Led by ward councillor Annette Deppe, the team of DA members, activists, and local volunteers dedicated 67 minutes to making a tangible difference in their neighbourhood.

Kicking off with a street clean-up on Greig Street, the volunteers rolled up their sleeves to beautify and reclaim their shared space. Equipped with gloves, weed-eaters, paint brushes, and hacksaws, the team focused on tidying up the area, removing debris, and giving the beloved Angel Tots Academy a fresh coat of paint.

“We did some painting, had JRA install stop signs, and had many activists help cut and gather the grass,” said Deppe. “We chose Angel Tots because they support the DA, and we also wanted to uplift the crèche – to give it a new touch for the children and the residents who rely on it.”

The success of the initiative was amplified through collaboration with local businesses, in particular, Spar Vorna Valley, who generously donated refuse bags for the cleanup.

“I want to thank all our activists for showing up today,” Deppe added. “And a special thank you to Spar for supporting us, as always, in Midrand.”

Among those who mobilised for the day’s activities were Michael Sun, a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, and regional representative Ria Humans.

Sun emphasised the community-driven spirit of the day. “We, as the DA, are out here in Vorna Valley, Midrand, today on Mandela Day, to give back to the community where we are cleaning the streets, fixing pavements, and installing stop-signage to ensure the traffic is safe.”
