Halfway House Development Forum urges City entities to join the course

Dr Andrew Jacovides, forum founder, said authorities needed to enforce by-laws to fight lawlessness.

The Halfway House Development Forum (HHDF) is adamant that the city’s entities must join the effort to revive the suburb.

During a meeting at the Health Emporium in Halfway House on September 4, Dr Andre Jacovides, forum founder, said the forum alone could not change the decaying suburb, which has been left unattended for years now.

He said authorities also needed to play their part by ensuring by-law enforcement in their bid to fight lawlessness, including illegal businesses.

“While we understand that we cannot have officers and environmental health practitioners in every corner, there’s a need for by-law enforcement. The illegal drinking within our area is out of hand that as seen by the amount of empty beer bottles that we have to pick up on Friday afternoons to Monday mornings,” said Jacovides.
Jacovides said the South African Police Service has to arrest people for public drinking, while the Johannesburg Metro Police Department needs to enforce traffic laws on the roads and not turn a blind eye to small crime because that’s how it starts.

The city’s communication department has been contacted regarding the involvement of relevant departments. Their response will be added as soon as it comes through.
