Mr and Miss Midrand Parliament pageant crowns their semi-final court

Sibusiso Moolar, Midrand Parliament president, said they want to expose learners to other career paths, especially if they don't do well academically.

In an effort to give young participants exposure to other career paths, Midrand Parliament (MP) held a successful Mr and Miss Pageant at Oracle Secondary School.

MP president Sibusiso Moolar said participating schools included David Makhubo Secondary School, Tsosoloso Ya Afrika Secondary School, Space Age Independent School, and Betari School.

The community hall was alive as each contestant stepped inside and made a brief speech about themselves in front of the judges on August 30.

Moolar said the aim was to create awareness and exposure around local high schools, especially in the townships in Midrand and Greater Ivory Park.

“Most learners in these areas end up as dropouts, or don’t know what to do after completing their Grade 12, because there are not enough platforms created and available while they are still in high school. We want to ensure that they make correct decisions about their future careers, while also enhancing their talents in high schools.”

He said some learners were academically challenged, because the curriculum is not their strong suit, but might be talented in something else, possibly pageantry or sports.

For David Makhubo Secondary School, Kagiso Modise was named king, while Malvin Dube was 1st prince. Keabetswe Mara was crowned queen, with Dineo Motuku and Kurhula Mokwena being named 1st and 2nd princess, respectively.

For Tsosoloso Ya Afrika Secondary School, Thabo Ngobeni was named as king, with Ontshimaetse Molathlegi and Tumelo Motloung crowned as 1st and 2nd princes. Molebogeng Setati was crowned queen for Space Age Independent School, and Palesa Themba was queen for Betari School.

Moolar said the finals will take place in due course as they have not yet finalised the date.
