Tsa Kasi Tennis Club teen serves her way into provincial tennis squad

From starting tennis in 2023 to now representing Gauteng’s central corridor, teen star Patience Zulu is proving that township talent can reach provincial heights.

The rising star of Tsa Kasi Tennis Club, captain Patience Zulu (14), has aced her way into the provincial junior tennis team.

The young talent has been selected to represent the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation (GSACR) central corridor at the upcoming provincial corridors finals. This milestone marks a major leap for both her career and her club.

Patience’s selection was confirmed on September 6 at the Soweto Jabavu Tennis Development Centre, following her strong showing in the singles category. The announcement brought tears of joy to her coach, Sydwell Ramakokovhu, who has guided her growth since she first picked up a racket in March 2023. “From day one, I could see she had something special to produce in tennis.” Ramakokovhu recalled the moment Patience sprinted towards him after her matches to exclaim: ‘Coach, I made it. My name is there for the provincial games selection’.

Patience’s achievement is not only personal; it’s a proud moment for the Rabie Ridge-based club, which has been working tirelessly to nurture sporting talent. Ramakokovhu said her success proves that local coaches are laying down a strong foundation for tennis development in the township.

He emphasised that, beyond tennis skills, he instils in his players discipline, leadership, and resilience to navigate both sport and life challenges.

Patience has taken these skills to heart, showing remarkable passion and discipline in both her academics and on the court. Ramakokovhu describes her as a go-getter with positive energy, who leads with purpose and humility.

“Patience is an A student. Academically and socially wise. She leads with passion, not emotions or ego, and she’s always ready for new challenges.”

Looking to the future, Ramakokovhu hopes that Patience’s selection will create opportunities for the club to partner with Gauteng Sports Tennis and attract sponsorships, which would help uplift young athletes in Rabie Ridge.

The club continues to seek sponsors to support the development of talent and cover transportation and other needs for the tournament.
