Councillor Deppe wary of illegal tree pruning in Vorna Valley

The regional manager of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Dr Joseph Ndou, warned those behind illegal tree pruning.

Ward 132 councillor, Annette Deppe, called for an immediate review of illegal tree-cutting activities in Vorna Valley, Midrand.

She said this was reported along Anton Hartmann Road and the Vleiview area.
She added that the residents have voiced their dissatisfaction and distress over the manner in which the trees are being hacked, reflecting a strong community sentiment that these actions are inappropriate and potentially harmful.

“I am deeply concerned about the reports I’ve received regarding the destruction of trees in our community. Trees are vital to our environment and community well-being, and any actions affecting them should be carried out with the utmost care and consideration,” said Deppe.

She said she intends to assess the situation personally and engage with relevant city departments to ensure that any tree-cutting activities are conducted responsibly and in accordance with the city’s environmental policies.

“I urge all involved parties to work collaboratively with the community to address these concerns swiftly. We must preserve the natural beauty and ecological health of our neighbourhoods.”

Residents are encouraged to report any further instances of inappropriate tree-cutting to Deppe.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) regional manager Dr Joseph Ndou said they were the only entity mandated to cut trees.

“Illegal tree pruning is a serious offence. JCPZ is the only city entity allowed to cut trees because we have the know-how. We urge our members to refrain from pruning trees because they damage their life span,” said Ndou.

He said those found to be cutting down city assets will be held responsible, with a possible hefty fine.
