Plans afoot to plant 2 000 trees in Noordwyk by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo in due course

The regional manager of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo said this is to integrate the new plants with the old ones to ensure continuity.

The Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) plans to plant about 2 000 trees in Noordwyk, Midrand.

JCPZ regional manager Dr Joseph Mbulaheni Ndou said this was because some of the trees in the area were ageing, and that Noordwyk was becoming a high-density residential area.

He also urged community members to be part of the tree planting on the identified sidewalks.

Ndou said that although the date has not yet been finalised, they will first engage the Noordwyk Residents Association and Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo.

“The majority will be interplanting – meaning we will plant trees between mature plants with the new trees so that when the old ones begin to age, these new ones can take over. The reason we are focusing on Noordwyk is that it’s turning into a high-density residential area, we expect a high number of traffic volumes, and trees help with the absorption of carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and shade, among many benefits,” said Ndou.

He also applauded the residents for taking care of the trees planted on Sagewood, Summerset, and Liebenberg roads, saying that upon their inspection, there were limited incidents of tree vandalism.

Ndou further urged residents to refrain from illegally pruning overgrown trees.

“All those must be reported to JCPZ because those who do it are doing it incorrectly, leaving trees infected with diseases and resulting in their life span being shortened,” added Ndou.

He said planted trees were city assets and as such protected by by-laws, and it was an offence to illegally prune trees.

September is Arbour Month, focusing on tree planting and conservation.
