Blocked Joburg Water manholes pose health hazard in Mayibuye
Residents say the blocked manholes have led to the sickness of children in the community.
Two blocked Johannesburg Water (JW) manholes have allegedly led to the sickness of some Mayibuye residents, including children.
According to the residents, one of the blocked manholes has been leaking since around November last year, while the other has been leaking for almost three weeks.
When Midrand Reporter visited the site on October 10, we were met with a strong, unpleasant stench of the overflowing sewer with visible human waste on Bulelwa Makofane and Leeba streets.

Resident Tinyiko Sibeko claimed the community had reported the issue about 15 times.

“We only get reference numbers, but it never gets fixed.” He added that JW had come to repair it, but after two to three hours, the sewage started overflowing again.
He said adults and children were getting sick, with runny stomachs.
JW was contacted on October 9 regarding the manholes, and updates will be provided once comment is received.
