Reddam’s talented duo step into the spotlight

Reddam House Helderfontein continues to nurture stars who shine far beyond the school stage, and Lunga and Nala are living proof.

Two rising drama talents from Reddam House Helderfontein are capturing attention in the performing arts world, achieving milestones that point to bright futures both locally and abroad.

Grade 12 learner Lunga Gqomo has been awarded a coveted scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York, a dream come true for the young actress, who has been passionate about performing since the age of four.

Her fellow learner, Grade 7 performer Nala Motha, recently dazzled audiences in Matilda JR at the Joburg Theatre and has just been cast in Madagascar—A Musical Adventure JR, which runs at the People’s Theatre from November 4 to December 24.

Both learners credit Reddam House Helderfontein’s strong performing arts programme for helping them grow in confidence and skill.

For Lunga, what began as a creative outlet became a lifelong calling. “I loved how I got to be different people and be in strange situations that I’d never actually find myself in. Watching my first play confirmed that this is what I was meant to do,” she explained.

As she prepares to take on the next chapter of her career in New York, Lunga is determined to soak up every opportunity for growth.

Nala’s career began at just five years old with a role in the TV drama Ring of Lies. She has since appeared in Generations—The Legacy and Ambition.

Reflecting on her stage experience, she said, “When I stepped under the stage lights and saw the audience respond emotionally, it clicked; this isn’t just something I enjoy, it’s something I want to do for the rest of my life.”

Head of culture Sanele Sibiya praised the pair, saying, “These young women are true examples of what it means to dream big, work hard, and use your talents to make an impact. We are so proud to have been part of their journey.”
