City Power continues with the free basic electricity roll out in Rabie Ridge and Mayibuye
With the December 31 deadline fast approaching, City Power is calling on residents in Rabie Ridge, Mayibuye, and surrounding areas to register, or check their registration, for the free basic electricity programme, which offers up to 120kWh of free power and crucial monthly savings for vulnerable families.
City Power, in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg Health and Social Development Department, is continuing with the free basic services [FBS] registration for all qualifying customers across the Midrand Service Delivery Centre (SDC) supply areas.
On November 18 and 19, the team will be at 437 Korhaan Crescent in Rabie Ridge, and on November 20 and 21, they will be at 2507 Inkwekwezi Street in Mayibuye, with operating hours from 09:00 to 15:00.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that, in addition, all current FBE beneficiaries are urged to check and renew their benefits to ensure they do not fall off the system.

“Renewals, which used to be required every six months, are now valid for 12 months. However, the utility is concerned that some qualifying households may have been automatically removed after their benefits lapsed, prompting a renewed push for customers to verify and update their details.”
By registering, residents can receive up to 120kWh of free electricity every month, depending on their household circumstances. “This means real power in their homes. Light to study, energy to prepare meals, and electricity to keep their families safe and connected.”

Mangena added that this is more than just free units; it helps households stretch their budgets and ensures that no family is left in the dark.
Notably, indigent customers will not pay the R70 service charge or the R130 network capacity charge, resulting in a total monthly saving of R200.
“This initiative forms part of our ongoing efforts to provide relief to the most vulnerable members of our community during these challenging economic times.”
Alternatively, residents can visit the City of Johannesburg regional offices at 300 15th Road, Randjespark, Midrand, also known as the customer service centre in Region A, from 09:00 to 15:00.
With the registration deadline of December 31 fast approaching, City Power urges eligible households to apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out.
“Every qualifying household deserves the relief provided by the FBE programme, and City Power remains committed to making it accessible to all.”
In addition to the FBE initiative, the city has launched phase four of its debt relief programme, running from November 1 this year to October 31, 2026, to assist residents and businesses facing financial hardship.
