Centenarian joy lights up Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge as two residents mark remarkable milestones

Highveld Gardens proved that ageing does not mean being forgotten, as two residents, reaching 100 and 105, are placed firmly in the spotlight during a celebration that honoured legacy and belonging.

Reaching 100 is a rare gift. Reaching 105 is extraordinary.

At Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge in Halfway Gardens, both milestones were celebrated in style on December 19. Residents, staff, and guests gathered to honour two of their own, Sybil Pearson and Cathy Ellis, whose lives span more than two centuries.

The warm birthday celebration paid tribute to Pearson, who turned an incredible 105, and Ellis, who proudly marked her 100th year. Laughter, applause, and heartfelt wishes filled the centre as the two ladies were celebrated, not only for their ages but also for the inspiration they continue to offer to younger generations.

Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge has been part of the Halfway Gardens community for over 30 years, operating as a family-style care facility that prides itself on inclusivity, dignity, and independence. The lodge welcomes residents regardless of age, race, gender, affiliation, or health status, and is known for its homely atmosphere, pet-friendly environment, and respect for residents’ independence.

Centre manager Pulane Motlafi said the occasion was deeply special for everyone involved. “Today we are celebrating two ladies’ birthdays, Mrs Sybill Pearson, who is turning 105, and Cathy Ellis, who is turning 100 years old.

“It is a blessing to reach this age. Not everyone gets to experience such long lives, and we are honoured to celebrate this moment with them.”

Motlafi added that the lodge’s philosophy is centred on care without exclusion. “We don’t only take the elderly. We also welcome people with disabilities or those who are unwell. Anyone who wishes to retire and be cared for in a family environment is welcome here.”

Motlafi said she hoped the milestone celebrations would not be the last. “I wish the birthday girls many more years. They may be old, but you can see they are still strong. I also want to thank the Midrand community and the Midrand Reporter for coming to celebrate these two remarkable ladies with us.”
