Seven rounds of strategy at Midrand blitz chess tournament
The sound of ticking clocks and focused minds filled the room as young learners and experienced players competed in the Midrand Chess Club’s Blitz Open tournament.
Young and old chess enthusiasts gathered at Halfway House Primary School on March 7 for the Midrand Chess Club’s blitz open-rated tournament.

The fast-paced competition brought together players of different ages and skill levels from across the communities, creating a lively atmosphere as competitors tested their strategy, speed, and concentration over the chessboard.

It was divided into three sections. Section A, which was open to players of all ages, offered cash prizes of R1 000 for first place, R500 for second place, and R300 for third place. Section B catered to high school learners, while section C was reserved for primary school learners, with medals and trophies up for grabs in both sections.

It consisted of seven rounds played in a 5+0 blitz format, a high-speed time control in which each player had only five minutes to complete a game, with no additional time added per move. The format ensured a thrilling pace, with players quickly moving from one round to the next as new pairings were announced moments after each match ended.

South African chess arbiter Sanele Mthombeni oversaw the competition, ensuring the tournament was conducted fairly and professionally in line with national and international chess regulations.

Midrand Chess Club coach Kgosimang Molefe said the tournament continues to grow each year, thanks to strong support from the local community. “We are grateful to the community, sponsors, players, and all stakeholders who continue to support and help grow the sport of chess.”
