Gauteng transport department confirms progress on delayed R55 roadworks

Following allegations that the contractor abandoned the site, the department says the team is still on the ground and pushing ahead with the R55 roadworks.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has confirmed that surfacing work on the R55 near Kyalami Corner has begun, following complaints that the long-delayed provincial road maintenance project had been abandoned.

Department’s spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said the surfacing was scheduled to start on March 19.

This comes after Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe raised concerns about the state of the project, alleging that the contractor had left the site. The delays added to already severe traffic congestion along the busy route, which has been a growing frustration for residents and motorists travelling through the area.

According to Mthombeni, the contractor remains on-site and is continuing to manage traffic while preparing to complete the outstanding work.

“The RIFSA 1&2 contractor is on-site, maintaining traffic accommodation whilst preparing to finish the works,” said Mpya. “Unfavourable weather is contributing to the delays… The team will monitor and ensure we complete.”
