“Being selected for the Gauteng athletics team means the world, getting to see these athletes as they show their talents against other champions from the other 8 provinces. There are also selectors and coaches from top athletics high schools who are looking for the best athletes to recruit for their schools, offering them bursaries, so this is really a good thing for these young athletes.”

Students from schools from 15 Gauteng districts were selected as part of the team which will represent Gauteng in the National School Sport Championships. A proud moment for everyone.

Mapula Hlongwane, chairperson of Gauteng Schools Athletics, described how this year’s team differs from past years.

“Each honours function is different, because, every year, there are new athletes that join the team. Our competition starts with 7-year-olds, ending with 19-year-olds.

Therefore, new athletes come in as older ones leave schools, going out into the Sport for Youth Championships at different federation and higher education facilities. The team that is honoured this year was selected on merit, considering all the analysis and profiling of last year’s results at nationals.

“The standard of competition is higher than the past year, and all the athletes performed better, attaining higher qualification standards than the past year.”

Curro made the cut, as two of their learners were chosen to be part of the team. This left Kgotso Lefifi, a Grade 10 learner, expressing his joy at this achievement.

“It definitely comes with a lot of pressure, but I know, with the assistance and support of my school, my friends, and my family, it helps a lot and helps me to stay composed. I feel proud to represent my school. Not only my school, but Gauteng.”
